  • Texas A&M AgriLife Open House – Tool Care

    Join Us in the Texas A&M AgriLife Demo Garden for our monthly Open House! The first Friday morning of every month is designated as a FREE open house for the Texas A&M AgriLife Earth-Kind Demonstration Garden at 1600 Smith Road, Austin. You’ll be able to visit the garden and speak with the Travis County Master Gardener volunteers who maintain it as well as get your gardening questions answered by the Plant Clinic staff. Each month will also feature some sort of demonstration or workshop that deep dive into subject areas. See monthly topics below.   • Free Day at Zilker Botanical Garden

    On select dates throughout the year, Zilker Botanical Garden offers free days where no admission is charged. Free Days for 2024: January 15, February 19, March 12, April 28, July 14, September 7, November 11, December 26 No advance registration is necessary. Final entry to the Garden is 4:30pm. Parking is always free and available via our main parking lot, which can be accessed through the front entrance of the garden. If overflow parking is needed, our overflow lot at 2300 Stratford Drive will be open. If you park in the overflow lot, you can enter directly across the street through the Hartman Gate at the back entrance. This is a highly ornamental gate and is easily recognizable.

  • Lake Travis Seed Library Opening

    Join us to celebrate the official opening of the Lake Travis Seed Library on April 22nd from 10AM to 12PM at the Lakeway MUD offices (1097 Lohmans Crossing). Come join us for a seed swap and get pro gardening tips from local experts. Feel free to bring any extra seeds you have and trade with other gardeners.

    Since 1983, the Austin Herb Society has been educating members and the community about herbs, including propagation, landscaping, history, folklore, and culinary, medicinal, and decorative uses of herbs. While our members are united by an interest in herbs, they are also a diverse group of individuals: from gardeners and herbalists to cooks and business owners. AHS members design and maintain the Zilker Herb Garden-a dazzling landscape of color and fragrance that has become a centerpiece of Zilker Botanical Garden. Here, visitors can touch, taste, and smell they way through nearly 200 varieties of herbs, depending on the season. Bees and butterflies dot the beds of basil, lavender, and calendula. There are classic culinary herbs like rosemary, mint, and thyme alongside herbs revered for their health attributes, including aloe and echinacea.   • LMUD Native Plant Talks

    LT Seed Library Seed Swap - 10am Presenter: Leah Crenwelge, local resident As a daughter of the pioneers who have been farming and ranching in the Texas Hill Country since the 1840s, Leah is excited to share with you her love of this land and its incredible plant biodiversity. Free seeds available through the LT Seed Library include Central Texas native plants and thriving veggies/herbs. Bring your extra seeds to swap or stop by for pro tips! Donations of heirloom/open-pollinated veggie/herb seeds and native plant seeds are also welcome. Growing Native Plants from Seed - 2pm Presenter: Craig Bruska, Chair Native Seed Committee, Native Plant Society of Texas Learn how and when to sow native plants seeds to create a native wildlife habitat from seed. Using the lowest cost method to replace water hungry nonnative grasses and plants with their native Texas plant equivalents suited to the Lakeway area. Learn how to select the right native plant to grow from seed for the soil, light, water needs.

  • Grow Green Garden Volunteer Workday

    Grow Green Garden Volunteer Workday at Zilker Botanical Garden Join the City of Austin staff from Watershed Protection Department in beautifying the Grow Green Garden inside Zilker Botanical Garden! This event is only open to the public. Please arrive prepared to work outdoors with closed-toed shoes and a full water bottle. We will provide all necessary tools. However, we recommend you bring a sun hat and you are welcome to bring your own gloves. The garden gate opens at 9 am. When you arrive at the garden, please show your GivePulse confirmation email to the gate staff at check-in to receive free admission for the day. After you've checked in, please park in our volunteer parking lot and meet your group at the flagpole in front of our main Garden Center building. A staff person will meet you for direction to the day's project. Thank you for your time volunteering at Zilker Botanical Garden!
